This Week in Terrible Judging - 10/1 - 10/7: Minor Cards, Major Errors

I do, goddammit.

Hi, I'm Verklemptomaniac. You may remember me from such Fanposts as "Liver Shots: Delicious But Dangerous" and "Hug It Out with Wlad and Ward", This week, in a couple of mid-level fights, we have some high-level bad judging, from both the US and across the Atlantic in the UK.

As always, if you're aware of crappy judging in fights that I missed, please let me know in the comments - my visibility into regional-level fights, particularly overseas, is limited to what I can notice from Boxrec's results page. (And if you aren't already, start reading jcar77's Under the Radar Fight Results Fanpost series - it's great work.)

Mohamed Mimoune SD-12 Sam Eggington (116-112, 115-113, 112-116)

This was a significant upset, as Eggington was seen as a prospect with world-class potential, while Mimoune was a decent Euro-level guy with two decision losses on the French circuit. By all accounts, Mimoune controlled the fight, and there was no real argument to give the fight to Egggington.

I guess you could say Eggington laid an egg. He went over easy. He wasn't as hard boiled as he thought. The sunny side was down for Eggington. He really got his brain scrambled. He got egg-white-washed.

But I digress.

Logic and reality have never stopped bad judging, however, and one of the three judges somehow scored 8 rounds for Eggington. So let's take a look at this fine specimen of bad judging!

Arnold Golger is an experienced German judge (and a lightly experienced ref), with 209 fights on his resume, including a lot of 10- and 12-round Euro-level title fights, both in Germany and throughout Europe. He seemingly correctly scored the 2014 Leonard Bundu/Frankie Gavin fight for Bundu, and generally has seemed to turn in scorecards in line with the other judges. He seems like a pretty solid judge overall, but he had a bad night here.

Christian Gonzalez UD-8 Gamaliel Diaz (79-72 x2, 76-75)

By the accounts I've read, this was a dirty, ugly fight, mostly thanks to Diaz, who had a point deducted late for holding and hitting, but who had engaged in a variety of creative scumbaggery throughout the fight. Despite the ugliness of the fight, Gonzalez won it going away, which is why it's so odd that one ref had it 4-4, which would've been a draw if not for the point deduction.

Raul Caiz Sr. is highly experienced judge, based in California, with nearly 500 fights on his resume; he's also a highly experienced ref. Caiz Sr. was featured in the second edition of This Week in Terrible Judging, after his dodgy scorecard in the Lucas Matthysse/Viktor Postal fight back in October 2015. Here's what I wrote about him back then:

Raul Caiz Sr. is another highly experienced judge, based in California; he had the score 86-85 Matthysse at the time of the stoppage, which is... curious. He had a draw card in Kazuto Ioka's home-cooking majority decision win over Juan Carlos Reveco in April. He scored Guillermo Rigondeaux/Ricardo Cordoba for Cordoba, which was notably incorrect. He scored Juan Diaz/Paulie Malignaggi I for Diaz, which was a bad decision, though he had the closest card (115-113 Diaz). His scoring is generally in line with the other judges, but he's been involved in a few strange scoring incidents. He was very, very bad in this fight.

Since then, he's continued to judge a lot of fights, and generally been competent. He was the only sane judge in Hassan N'dam's robbery split decision win over Ryota Murata back in May, so credit to him there. He had a too-close 104-103 card at the time of stoppage in Takashi Miura's January technical decision win over Miguel Roman, and a similarly too-close 114-113 card in David Avanesyan's May 2016 decision win over Shane Mosley.

Caiz Jr. rarely has a truly awful scorecards, but he's had a fair number of fairly awful ones over the years. On accumulation, he's the newest member of our Two-Time Losers club, though likely the least-bad of the current members. (He forms the only father-daughter pairing in that illustrious grouping, with his daughter, Carla Caiz, who does seem to be a pretty bad judge. It runs in the family!)
