Showtime Championship Boxing: Erislandy Lara outpoints Terrell Gausha

Erislandy Lara cruised past Terrell Gausha in an uninspiring fight.

Erislandy Lara successfully defend his WBA junior middleweight title tonight in the Showtime main event — despite it being the least entertaining fight of the night. Lara was in control early and never really had to get out of first gear to handle Gausha. At the end of 12 rounds Lara won on official scores of 116-111, 117-110, and 117-110. I scored the fight 118-109 in favor of Lara, but admittedly lost interest pretty early in a boring fight.

The crowd in the Barclays Center began to clear out heavily during this fight, and by the final round it seemed like there were only a couple dozen people left. Fans could also be heard counting down the seconds towards to end of the final rounds in sarcastically mocking fashion — anxious to get things over with.

But, in the end, a win is a win is a win. Lara, despite a hardly entertaining performance, continues to claim his spot as arguably the best 154 pounder out there. That said, there won't be many clamoring to show up to his next fight with showcases like this one.
