Loeffler: Canelo wants Golovkin rematch, Golovkin prepared to sit out until May

Gennady Golovkin would like to fight sooner than next May but is prepared to wait if it means a rematch with Canelo.

According to Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler, all involved parties are keen on working out a deal to hold a Canelo-Golovkin rematch next May. Loeffler says that Golovkin would ideally like to get in a fight sooner than May, when Canelo is expected to return, but is willing to take a seat on the bench if it means that fight will come off.

"Everything I've heard is that Canelo doesn't want to fight until before May, so that is part of a concession on Gennady's side, as Gennady would like to fight sooner than May.

"But Gennady's agreed that if we can do the rematch directly, he'll wait until then.”

Loeffler continued by mentioning that if things begin to drag on past May then it’ll be an indication that Canelo and his team don’t really want the rematch, but as of now he believes they’re on track.

The Cinco de Mayo fight date (which actually lands on a Saturday this year) is already on hold at the T-Mobile Arena, the site of the first fight between Canelo and Golovkin, so it’s a safe bet the fight will land there if it happens.

The WBC has also officially ordered a rematch between the men, but don’t expect that ‘order’ to mean much to Canelo Alvarez these days, as he’s repeatedly turned his back on the sanctioning body.
