Chris Eubank Jr was too fast and too good today in Germany, as he knocked out previously unbeaten Avni Yildirim to advance to the semifinal round of the World Boxing Super Series super middleweight tournament.
Eubank (26-1, 20 KO) dropped Yildirim (16-1, 10 KO) after an uppercut in the first round, forcing Yildirim to take a knee, and finished things off in the third frame with a flurry of offense that ended with a sweeping left hook.
Yildirim hit the canvas, and the referee immediately halted the fight, which was pretty one-sided, a showcase for Eubank’s hand speed and combination punching, and an exposure of Yildirim’s one-dimensional attack.
Eubank, seeded third in the tournament, now awaits the winner of next Saturday’s fight between WBA titleholder George Groves (26-3, 19 KO) and Jamie Cox (24-0, 13 KO), which will take place at Wembley Arena in London. The very obvious hope is that Groves will win, setting up a big clash between Groves and Eubank in the United Kingdom.
