While Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez try to hash out a rematch, the WBC has has decided it wants to keep some titles in play. President Mauricio Sulaiman informed ESPN Deportes that Jermall Charlo will face Hugo Centeno Jr. for the interim middleweight belt in January.
Charlo (26-0, 20 KO) announced his arrival in the middleweight division with a one-sided savaging of Jorge Sebastian Heiland in September. The Houston native has knocked out eighteen of his last twenty opponents, including Julian Williams with a picture-perfect uppercut last December.
Centeno (26-1, 14 KO) was a prospect of note before getting stopped by Maciej Sulecki last year. He’s since regained some luster by knocking out Immanuwel Aleem with a downright brutal left hook.
Not my first choice for a Charlo foe, but if it gets him in the ring more often, I’ll take it.
