Tyson Fury is a close friend of Billy Joe Saunders, and was in attendance last night in Laval, Quebec, when Saunders routed David Lemieux to retain the WBO middleweight title.
Saunders (26-0, 12 KO) has said he’s ready to fight Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez in 2018, and that’s exactly what Fury believes is needed to test his pal.
“After that performance, I’d say he needs to be tested by somebody like Golovkin or Canelo,” Fury said. “They’re really the only two guys who I think could give him a fight.”
As for Daniel Jacobs, another top contender, Fury doesn’t seem him as a big threat.
“You look at, people mention Danny Jacobs. Danny Jacobs is very similar to David Lemieux, and we saw what happened here tonight,” he said.
Fury also doesn’t believe we’ve yet seen the best of Saunders, even with the way he dominated against Lemieux.
“By no means was this the best of Billy Joe Saunders. He’s got all the levels, and we’re going to see them, I think,” he said. “Very much more to come. He boxed extremely well. The better opponent he faces, the better you’ll see of Billy Joe Saunders.”
Fury continued, “He’s got a very awkward style, southpaw, counter puncher. There’s one way to beat Billy Joe Saunders, quite simply: knock him out. Failing to do that, you’re not going to win.”
