Felix Diaz out of fight with ‘badly bruised testicles’

Promoter says he’ll fight again soon, “when his balls are better.” Like, physically.

Felix Diaz, the former Olympic gold medalist and current junior welterweight contender, was supposed to make a return to action in Cancun, Mexico, but suffered an unusual injury in training camp.

Promoter Lou DiBella explained it to ESPN:

“He forgot his cup one day so he sparred without it and got nailed in the balls. It caused a real injury. He’s got badly bruised testicles. He took a major shot to the balls without a cup and it caused a lot of swelling. We were trying to get Felix a fight before the end of the year. He’s been eager to fight. It’s a cringe-worthy injury but sometimes life’s a pain in the balls. He’ll be back when his balls are better, hopefully in January.”

You have to tip your hat to DiBella for looking at this with something of a humorous slant, even though truthfully there’s nothing funny about it.

OK, it’s a little funny. I mean, it’s horrible and surely dreadfully painful.

But a little funny.

Diaz, 34, was looking to bounce back from a one-sided loss to Terence Crawford in May. Crawford stopped Diaz (19-2, 9 KO) after 10 rounds of action, and laid a pretty severe beating on him. But he didn’t destroy his testicles.

Good luck to Felix Diaz and his balls.
