Miguel Berchelt, who had to withdraw from a bout with Orlando Salido due to a hand injury, is all set to return to action. “El Alacran” will make the second defense of his title against WBC #5 Cristian Mijares in Cancun on February 10th.
Berchelt (32-1, 28 KO) is, in my opinion, the clear number-two guy in the super featherweight division behind Vasyl Lomachenko thanks to wins over Francisco Vargas and Takashi Miura. It’s disappointing that he’s not fighting “Hi-Tech” or #1 contender Miguel Roman, who beat Salido down, but he is coming off of an injury and, at 26, has plenty of time.
Mijares (58-8-2, 26 KO) held titles at super flyweight and bantamweight, but came up short in super bantamweight bids against Victor Terrazas and Leo Santa Cruz. He’s won nine straight, most notably handing Andres Gutierrez his first defeat last year. He’s still a solid fighter at 36, but Berchelt looks like way too much for him.
Anyone disagree?
