Dominic Breazeale and Izu Ugonoh aren’t going to ever be in a Fighter of the Year discussion, but they’re at least in the early Fight of the Year discussion for 2017 after a heavyweight war tonight in Birmingham, Alabama, with both men hitting the canvas in the five round battle.
Breazeale (18-1, 16 KO) once again showed incredible heart, picking up a TKO-5 victory over previously unbeaten Ugonoh (17-1, 14 KO). Breazeale was outboxed a little in the first couple of rounds, but dropped Ugonoh in the third, and Ugonoh getting up and continuing on was a testament to his heart and determination, too.
The third wasn’t all Breazeale, though, as Ugonoh came back to rock the former Olympian a couple of times, before Breazeale hurt Ugonoh again right at the bell. In the fourth, Breazeale went down, and Ugonoh seemed to be back in firm control of the fight. But Breazeale found the sweet spot again in round five, putting Ugonoh down, and then finishing him off with another knockdown that sent Ugonoh out of the ropes and to the apron of the ring.
If you missed this one, find a way to watch it, particularly if you like a good, somewhat sloppy, all action heavyweight brawl. That’s the best we could have hoped for in this fight, and that’s what we got.
