Tonight at 11 p.m. ET on HBO Boxing After Dark, David Lemieux meets Curtis Stevens in a battle of hard punching middleweights, with Yuriorkis Gamboa coming back in the co-feature.
Lemieux (36-3, 32 KO) and Stevens (29-5, 21 KO) have some bad blood, and even if they didn’t, there’s plenty of action potential. Both guys are power punchers and go for the knockout, and the smart money is on this not seeing the final bell after round 12.
Gamboa (25-1, 17 KO) will meet Rene Alvarado (24-7, 16 KO) in a 10-round fight just above the super featherweight limit. The 35-year-old Gamboa hasn’t fought since 2015, and this will be his first bout under the Golden Boy banner. Alvarado is coming off of a win over Jayson Velez.
I’m out this evening, so Wil Esco will be on the call tonight. Join him for some kinda rare HBO boxing action!

ROUND BY ROUND
DAVID LEMIUEX vs CURTIS STEVENS
Round 1: Steven's corner forgot his mouthpiece in the dressing room which delays the start of the fight - bad omen? Now the opening bell rings. Lemieux lands a hard right hand to the body. Lemieux not wasting any time. Stevens lands a hard left hook. BOMBS AWAY EARLY! This won't be going all 12. Lemieux lands a right hook to the body. Stevens lands a hard left hook to the body. Hard right hook momentarily shakes up Stevens. Stevens goes into his shell along the ropes as he looks to recover. Now Stevens throws three right hooks of his own. Both rights throwing all power shots - real power shots. Fast start for Lemieux. Lemieux hurts Stevens again but the bell rings! Lemieux 10-9.
Round 2: Lemieux comes out hard right away, taking Stevens to the ropes. Stevens catch Lemieux back with a left hook. Lemieux just winging one hard shot after another. Stevens keeping a tight guard and trying to catch-and-shoot. Stevens lands a nice punch on Lemieux. Stevens doubles up left hooks to the head and body. Lemieux catches Stevens with a left hook. Both fighters trade left hooks to the body. Stevens stings Lemieux with a nasty left hook downstairs. I think Lemieux edges the round based on his early work. Lemieux 10-9, 20-18.
Round 3: Stevens lands a nice jab, then a counter left hook to the chin. Now Stevens is coming forward and strafing Lemieux with hard shots. Nice right hand leads for Stevens. Lemieux lands a good hook back. BANG!!!! LEMIEUX LANDS A PERFECT LEFT HOOK THAT KNOCKS STEVENS OUT COLD!!!! IT'S OVER!!!!!! Maybe the knockout of the year! LEMIEUX KO-3.
YURIORKIS GAMBOA vs RENE ALVARADO
Round 1: Both fighters exchange body shots at center ring. Gamboa rties a right hand to the body, both fighting a little tentative as they feel one another out. Alvarado throws a right hand to the body which falls short. Gamboa lets go a flurry, his blazing hand speed still apparently intact. Fair slow opening round. Gamboa 10-9.
Round 2: Gamboa hits Alvarado with a right hand to the body. Alvarado laying back and making Gamboa come to him which is why the tempo is very measured. Gamboa doesn't seem to be as swift on his feet as he used to be but Gamboa tags Alvarado with a right hook anyway. Not much damage has been done by either fighter thus far. Gamboa 10-9, 20-18.
Round 3: Gamboa leads with a a hook that doesn't land flush. Gamboa doubles up to the head and body. Alvarado missing a few right hand leads. Alvarado tries a jab to the body, but just grazes Gamboa. The crowd is getting restless as the pace continues to drag along. Gamboa throws a a combination, lands one right hook. Gamboa 10-9.
Round 4: This fight just feels like a amateur match rather than a professional one. Most the crowd is dead silent which isn't a great sign for a prize fight. Alvarado lands another jab to the body. Gamboa goes for a hook to the head which is blocked. Gamboa is winning and controlling the fight but man, this fight is dull...Gamboa 10-9.
Round 5: Gamboa comes out a little more aggressively in this round - much to the crowd's delight. Gamboa lands a short right uppercut. Gamboa lands a right hook, misses on a left which follows. Gamboa is sliding off to angles even when he's not punching so Alvarado can't get off much, but he's not really pressing the fight either. I'm having flashbacks to Rigodeaux-Francisco. Gamboa 10-9, 50-45.
Round 6: Gamboa lands a right uppercut from the outside. After about a minute of nothingness Gamboa lands a counter right. Gamboa flashes a fast combination and clips Alvarado with a right. Alvarado lands a jab to thebody. I'm sorry, but this just isn't made for TV - well at least not HBO. Take this to Telemundo. Gamboa 10-9.
Round 7: You can literally hear two or three people in the crowd because everyone else is in a stupor. Gamboa lands a nice right hand. Both fighters actually trade two or three punches. Alvarado lands a hard right on the jaw. Gamboa and Alvarado are missing a lot of punches throughout the fight, Alvarado just a lot more. I can't wait for this fight to end. Gamboa 10-9, 70-63.
Round 8: ....Gamboa 10-9.
Round 9: Alvarado lands a nice counter right hand. Gamboa lands a clean left hook. Out of nowhere Gamboa unloads an aggressive flurry and hurts Alvarado a little. Alvarado goes down but it's ruled a slip. There is very, very little happening in this fight. Gamboa lands a right hook. Gamboa 10-9, 90-81.
Round 10: Gamboa gets dropped in an exchange with Alvarado! Gamboa gets up and looks to be fine. Gamboa looks to get that one back as he turns up the aggression on Alvarado. Gamboa rushes in with a combination, gets caught with a counter in between. The best thing about this fight is that it's now over. Alvarado 10-8. BLH scores the fight for Gamboa 98-91.
