One of the year’s best fights appears to have a date and location.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Eddie Hearn confirmed today that Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr. have signed to face one another on May 27th at Sheffield’s Brammall Lane. All that remains is some logistical work with the Sheffield Council before they officially announce the event.

I do apologize for linking to the Mail, but it’s a firsthand source. Don’t worry, I washed my hands afterwards.

Brook (36-1, 25 KO), who gave Gennady Golovkin one of his toughest fights to date, has knocked out seven of his last eight opponents. That said, outside of Golovkin, he’s been spinning his wheels since edging Shawn Porter for his IBF belt in 2014. Beating Spence would do wonders for asserting his place atop the division alongside Keith Thurman.

Spence (21-0, 18 KO) has knocked out eight straight and looked more or less unstoppable in the process. He passes the eye test with flying colors, but Brook is quite a different beast from the likes of Chris Algieri and Leonard Bundu.

It’s a fight that makes perfect sense and, stylistically, could make for some great entertainment. Not much more you could ask for, really.
