Mikey Garcia says he’d fight Keith Thurman this summer

Garcia gives his thoughts on where he’d like to go from here.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

In this video interview with FightHype, lightweight titlist Mikey Garcia talks about there being so much to do with so little time...

Garcia on what he wants to accomplish next:

“There’s a lot of things I want to do but you don’t have enough time to do everything. I would like to be undisputed. I would also jump up right now to fight [Keith] Thurman, and then come back down to 40 and then 35 again.

“I’ll fight [Thurman] right now. Let’s get him, let’s start calling out for Thurman. Let’s get him at 47, I’ll fight him at 47 in July. How about that? I’ll do it.”

On what he thought about Thurman’s performance against Danny Garcia:

“Uh, I expected a little more. Especially after he hurt Danny in the first couple rounds I thought he was going to stop him, maybe...but he layed off the gas the last few rounds and that’s what made Danny get back in the fight but it was a decent fight, it was close...”

On if he rates Thurman as the best welterweight right now:

“Mmmmm, no. We talked about how maybe [Errol] Spence might be. In skills, technically, I think Spence has the better skills - better boxing, technique, cleaner punching, cleaner combinations, cleaner footwork - all that. [But] he got to prove himself. He’s got a tough fight coming up against Kell Brook.”
