Lightweight prospect Ryan “Blue Chip” Martin stayed unbeaten tonight, stopping Bryant Cruz early in the 8th round of what wound up being a mismatch to open the Golovkin-Jacobs pay-per-view card.
Martin (18-0, 11 KO) landed 234 of 573 (41%) total punches according to CompuBox, compared to 129 of 366 (35%) for Cruz, who falls to 17-2 (8 KO) with his second loss in his last three fights.
The main story of the fight was the obvious size difference. At 5’11”, Martin is a big lightweight, and towered over Cruz, whose nickname is “Pee Wee.” That meant that even though Cruz was fairly even in shots landed early in the fight, it was Martin doing significantly more damage, which added up as the bout went on. Martin attacked the head and body effectively, mixed up his punches, and threw in combination nicely. It was a promising showcase for him.
At the time of stoppage, BLH had it 70-63 and 69-64 in favor of Martin.
What did you think of Martin’s win tonight? Do you see contender potential in him?
