Former middleweight titleholder Andy Lee made his comeback tonight at Madison Square Garden, defeating KeAndrae Leatherwood in a non-televised bout on the Golovkin-Jacobs PPV card.

Lee (35-3-1, 24 KO) won a decision on scores of 78-74, 79-73, and 80-72, in a bout that has been described by those in the building as “dull.” Leatherwood falls to 19-4-1 (12 KO).

This was the first fight for the 32-year-old Lee since his December 2015 loss to Billy Joe Saunders, where Lee lost the WBO middleweight title. The win tonight not only gets Lee back in the ring with a win, but puts him solidly in the mix to face Gennady Golovkin later this year, if fights with Canelo Alvarez and Saunders don’t pan out for GGG. In short, Lee was auditioning for a New York fight with Golovkin, and really all he had to do was win tonight. He’s not the first choice to face GGG, but he’s got some name value, and, well, Golovkin might be running out of people to face.

Of course, Golovkin has to first get past the dangerous Daniel Jacobs tonight, which is coming up in just a couple of hours. Join us for live coverage!
