Derrick James, the trainer of IBF mandatory challenger Errol Spence Jr., took a few moments to catch up with FightHub after the opening Brook-Spence press conference. Here's what he had to say when asked about his thoughts on his little dust up with the opposing side during the presser...
On what the argument with Brook's team was about:
"Don't talk about the fight that you lost, right? Because you've got 36 other fights you could've talked about...we can't give a consolation prize for a loss. You lost, I don't give you any extra credit for that. You lost...You thought that you were good enough to beat [Golovkin] and in the fight you learned that you were not good enough to beat that guy. That's the one lesson that he learned, that he's not as good as he thought he was, and that's okay."
On if he thinks Brook could have trouble hitting 147 after moving up to middleweight:
"I know that he's a multi-millionaire. So what that means is that he can hire every dietician, get all the right meals, he's not a poor fighter...so he's okay, he's not a big guy. You saw them stand up next to each other...He's a fat guy that likes to eat that's the difference...he likes to eat, so maybe he has a lack of discipline when it comes to eating but he trains hard and he looks great in fights. He says he likes to go down to the refrigerator in the middle of the night -- that's what he said, I'm using his words -- so that's where the issues lie...."
