In a must-win fight for both parties, Andrzej Fonfara rallied to stop former light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson 38 seconds into the 10th and final round on Saturday night in Brooklyn, putting himself back into the mix at 175 pounds, and putting Dawson clear out of the picture.
Fonfara (29-4, 17 KO) was reportedly down on the cards, but dropped Dawson (34-5, 19 KO) in the ninth round, then hurt him early in the 10th, following up with a flurry that forced the referee to call off the fight 38 seconds into the final round.
For Dawson, this is a devastating, potentially final career setback, as the 34-year-old hasn’t scored a notable win since a 2012 victory over Bernard Hopkins, and is now 3-4 in his last seven fights.
For Fonfara, it’s a step back in the right direction after a stunning upset loss to Joe Smith Jr last year in Chicago. This was Fonfara’s first bout back after that defeat.
