Adonis Stevenson will face Andrzej Fonfara in a rematch on June 3, according to Stevenson on social media, with his promoter Yvon Michel saying details still need to be finalized. But ESPN has reported on the fight, which means it’s likely as close to a done deal as need be.
Stevenson (28-1, 23 KO) beat Fonfara (29-4, 17 KO) back in 2014, when Fonfara was relatively unknown and did a good deal better than many expected. This rematch, however, comes with some fairly odd timing, as Fonfara did win three in a row after that — including victories over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Nathan Cleverly — but lost badly last June to Joe Smith Jr.
Fonfara last fought on March 4, beating former champion Chad Dawson via 10th round TKO, a fight where he had to rally from behind to secure the victory.
There was some hope that Stevenson, 39, would face WBC mandatory challenger Eleider Alvarez next, but Alvarez accepted a step-aside deal last month, clearing the way for Stevenson to face Fonfara, 29, in June.
