During a teleconference that was held yesterday, Canelo Alvarez made clear that his intentions are to fight in the middleweight division once he takes care of business with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next month.
"Look, I'm not a current world champion at middleweight. I have been in the past, but I'm not now," Alvarez said through a translator. "And as far as the weight, after this fight, I'm not looking past this fight. I'm focused 100 percent on this fight, but I'm now staying at middleweight. I'll stay at 160 pounds."
That leaves a glimmer of hope that a fall showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin may actually come off, especially after Oscar De La Hoya appeared to be pleased with Golovkin’s apparent decision to skip out on his summer fight to focus on a Canelo bout in September as reported by RingTV.
“All of our focus is on Canelo and Chavez,” De La Hoya said on a conference call on Tuesday in response to a question on the news. “I actually didn’t even know he wasn’t going to fight in June. That’s obviously a good indication but our focus is on Canelo and Chavez.”
Canelo and Chavez Jr. are set to do battle on May 6 at a catchweight of 164.5lbs, but the real question is what comes next. At this point a number of fans truly expect Canelo and his team to continue to evade Golovkin when push comes to shove and instead target an in-house match-up against a more favorable style match-up for Canelo, perhaps against someone like David Lemieux.
