Boxing has seen a minor upswing in tragedy in recent years, starting with Magomed Abdusalamov and continuing on with Prichard Colon, Nick Blackwell, and most recently Eduard Gutknecht, who was rushed to the hospital after a one-sided loss to George Groves in November.

Gutknecht’s wife, Julia, sat down for an interview with Germany’s BoxWelt.com, detailing her husband’s continuing struggles. Still wheelchair-bound, Gutknecht will never fully recover, requiring nursing care for the rest of his life. He is unable to speak, though “he is sometimes able to communicate by nods”.

According to Mrs. Gutknecht, George Groves’ promoter (Kalle Sauerland) is passing along donations, while Gutknecht’s promoter (Wiking Boxteam) has no contact with the family.

World Boxing News has passed along the banking details for those wishing to donate. We wish only the best for Gutknecht and his family and hope that the boxing world came come together and ease their struggles.
