The fight marked Valdez’s second title defense

Top Rank had a pay-per-view last night. If you, like the majority of functional human beings, felt that Oscar Valdez vs. Miguel Marriaga wasn’t worth over $50, fear not; I found some other suckers who bravely took the hit for us.

Marriaga, a gritty puncher out of Colombia who fell fall short in his first title bid against Nicholas Walters, reportedly gave the heavily favored Valdez everything he could handle. Strong early and late work carried WBO featherweight champ Valdez (22-0, 19 KO) to a too-wide decision victory, bolstered by a tenth-round knockdown. By the sound of it, Marriaga (25-2, 21 KO) continued to prove himself a consistent entertainer and Valdez asserted himself as one of the most exciting young talents under Top Rank’s employ.

Now let’s stop hiding these guys behind massive paywalls.

Gilberto Ramirez (35-0, 24 KO) and Jessie Magdaleno (25-0, 18 KO) cruised past respective opponents Max Bursak (33-5-1, 15 KO) and Adelison Dos Santos (18-3, 14 KO) in their WBO title defenses, as expected, while Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson (1-0, 0 KO) opened the show with a wide technical decision over the headbutt-happy Edgar Brito (3-3-1, 2 KO).

On the undercard, Uzbek gold medalist Fazliddin Gaibnazarov (1-0, 1 KO) suffered a knockdown twenty seconds into his pro debut, but fought back to knock out Victor Vazquez (7-3, 3 KO) in two.
