Georgia’s Levan Ghvamichava, “The Wolf,” scored a solid win last night in Tunica, Mississippi, handing Oscar Molina his second pro loss by decision at Fitzgerald’s Casino, winning a 10-round unanimous decision.
Scores for the fight were 97-93, 98-92, and 98-92.
Ghvamichava (18-3-1, 13 KO) has become something of a cult favorite, and is a TV regular who will use this win to stay in the fringe mix at 147 pounds.
In his last four fights, Ghvamichava has lost to Sergey Lipinets at 140, then moved up to beat Breidis Prescott, lose to Yordenis Ugas, and now defeat Molina (13-2-1, 10 KO), whose only previous loss came against fellow prospect Jarrett Hurd at 154 pounds last June. But this does make two straight losses for Molina, who represented Mexico at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Ugas (19-3, 9 KO) was also in action on the card, defeating Nelson Lara (17-8-4, 9 KO) by second round TKO in a junior middleweight fight, the de facto main event of the show. He was subbing in for Mario Barrios on late notice.
Ugas has now won four straight fights, including knocking off then-unbeaten prospects Jamal James and Bryant Perrella last year, after back-to-back losses in 2014. It may be interesting to see if the 30-year-old Cuban can keep rattling off wins and become the contender that was once envisioned.
Former IBF heavyweight titleholder Charles Martin (24-1-1, 22 KO) fought for the first time since being steamrolled by Anthony Joshua a year ago, stopping journeyman Byron Polley (30-21-1, 13 KO) in the second round.
