Kal Yafai will be making the first defense of his WBA “world” super flyweight title this Saturday on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. It’s expected to be a routine defense against Japan’s Suguru Muranaka, and if successful, Yafai is hoping for a big name later this year.
Specifically, he wants to face Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, who will at some point rematch Srisaket Sor Rungvisai for the WBC title that Gonzalez controversially lost in March.
From Sky:
"He's got a rematch with the guy who beat him but I expect him to clearly win this time," Yafai said. "Then, hopefully a fight [against me] can be made.
"That's the only person for me. He's a massive name and, if he can win his next fight, it would be a huge WBC-WBA unification with a lot of money at the table."
Yafai (21-0, 14 KO) defeated Luis Concepcion to win the then-vacant WBA belt in December, winning a wide decision in Manchester. He returns home to Birmingham to face Muranaka (25-2-1, 8 KO) this weekend.
