Gervonta Davis ready for U.K. fight against Liam Walsh

Gervonta Davis says he’s not fazed by going on the road, and Liam Walsh says he’s prepared to pull the upset.

Gervonta Davis is defending his IBF super featherweight title this Saturday on Showtime, traveling overseas to do so in London against unbeaten Liam Walsh.

Davis (17-0, 16 KO) is just 22 years old, and you have to wonder if the pressure of going across the pond might get to him. He’ll be fighting in hostile territory in his first title defense, but right now he’s saying the right things:

“It's good for me to fight in the U.K. I fought overseas when I was an amateur so now I'm going as a pro and I feel like it's a great opportunity. I'm actually excited to fight in the U.K. I believe that I will have a crowd over there and I'm excited to put on a show for the U.K. fans.”

Walsh (21-0, 14 KO) is a former British and Commonwealth champion, and the mandatory challenger for Davis’ belt. He believes he’ll be able to put Davis to tests that the 22-year-old hasn’t seen yet:

"I feel like I've been in tougher fights than him. I feel like I've been in longer fights. I think I have a better boxing IQ than him. He's very powerful, very physical and very fast, but we haven't seen him in a long fight or a dog fight or a grueling fight though. I will certainly ask all these questions. I'll do it any which way that it has to go. I'm more than confident I'll get the job done."

If Davis is going to be the star that Floyd Mayweather and Mayweather Promotions envision, he has to get through this fight, and probably impressively — struggling to beat a fighter most see as a fringe contender lucky to have a mandatory isn’t going to turn a lot of heads. But Walsh isn’t planning for this to be an easy night for “Tank” Davis, either, and this may be the only shot he gets.
