Badou Jack’s now-vacant WBC super middleweight title won’t be vacant for much longer, as top contenders Callum Smith and Anthony Dirrell have signed to fight for it on September 9th in Los Angeles. Smith’s trainer, Joe Gallagher, confirmed the news earlier today.
ITS ON . @CallumSmith23 signs to fight for the @wbcboxing World Super Middleweight title v Anthony Dirrell on September 9 in LA #Mundo
— Joe Gallagher (@JoeG) May 19, 2017
Both men have been in holding patterns in recent years. Smith (22-0, 17 KO) has been pummeling all comers on the British scene, while Dirrell (30-1-1, 24 KO) has fought just three times against middling opposition since losing his title to Jack in 2015.
Oddly enough, both of them destroyed Norbert Nemesapati within approximately four months of one another. You’d think the poor sod’d suffered enough.
It’s about time Smith stepped up to the world level and it’s good to see Dirrell returning to it, especially since the super middleweight division is at its most open in some time. As always, we’ll have venue and undercard details for you as soon as they’re available.
