WBA joins WBC in suspending Leon Lawson Jr

Andre Dirrell’s uncle has been banned by another sanctioning body.

SHOWTIME

Leon Lawson Jr, the uncle and coach of Andre Dirrell, has now been indefinitely suspended by another sanctioning body. The WBA has joined the WBC in banning Lawson from working fights that their sanctioning body oversees.

The WBC banned Lawson earlier this week, following his post-fight sucker punch to Jose Uzcategui last Saturday night in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Here’s what WBA President Gilberto Mendoza said:

"We think it was an action that all those who love sport should reject. There was a blow after the bell, the product of an action that I consider involuntary, that (Uzcategui) could not stop, and then the cowardly act in which Lawson punched the boxer occurred. Therefore, as the WBC did, we suspended him indefinitely. I rejected the incident since I saw it.”

Lawson is also still wanted by authorities on two counts of assault, and it’s unlikely that his professional woes will end with the WBC and WBA, either. The IBF will likely take action soon, as they were the organization sanctioning the Dirrell-Uzcategui fight, and it’s already been suggested to members of the Association of Boxing Commissions that they refuse to license Lawson in the future.
