Canelo vs Chavez Jr results: Joseph Diaz Jr opens PPV with win

Joseph Diaz Jr opened up the Canelo-Chavez Jr PPV with a win over Tino Avila.

Boxing: Diaz vs Avila Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Joseph Diaz Jr stayed undefeated with a solid if a bit pedestrian win tonight on HBO pay-per-view, defeating Manuel “Tino” Avila in a 10-round featherweight bout.

Diaz (24-0, 13 KO) ran away with the fight in the second half, after a cut opened up on the left eye of Avila (22-1, 8 KO), seemingly bothering the B-side prospect and giving Diaz a target to keep whacking away at.

This wasn’t a spectacular performance from Diaz, 24, but certainly a strong win and a clear victory. BLH had it 99-91 for Diaz, while official scores were 99-91, 99-91, and 100-90, a runaway win overall.

Diaz landed 127 of 410 (31%) of his total punches, and 113 of 309 (37%) of his power shots, compared to 75 of 299 (25%) total punches for Avila, who connected on 72 of 246 (29%) of his power shots. Needless to say, this was not a fight where the jab came into play much on either side.

What did you think of Diaz’s performance tonight? Is he ready for world level, or at least as ready as he’s going to get?
