In this video interview caught by FightHub, light heavyweight champion Andre Ward is asked what would’ve happened if he had to face one of his idols in Roy Jones Jr during his prime...
Ward on who would win if he fought a prime Roy Jones Jr. at light heavyweight:
“That’s like blasphemous to me, to even you know...Roy was a dangerous man. Period. I just put it like that, he’s a dangerous man. I don’t even know. I don’t even like to tout myself against guys I looked up to, it’s hard. I just respect him, give him that place, and I let the fans and the media debate that stuff.
“It’s fun to see you guys debate and talk about it but like I don’t really, I can’t even think about that.”
On Roy being such an unothodox fighter:
“Yeah but that dude, man, he was country strong though. He was unorthodox, he hit you something, you’d be asleep for two weeks! Like ‘how’d he get that off?!’ Body, upper - I mean everything he did wrong, right. That’s why I fell in love with his style like ‘man, this dude is breaking all the rules but he’s getting away with it!’ And he’s got swag! So, yeah, Roy’s on another level man.”
On if he ever tried to pattern his style after Roy:
“Oh yeah. I was a lot like Roy, a lot like Roy. I hand the hands out like this, you know I’m leaping with the left hook. I mean I fought almost exclusively like Roy and then Virg had to tell me like ‘son, I know this is your guy but you gotta develop your own style.’ So I slowly gotten away from Roy’s style in the last 10 years but when I was an amateur man, yeah, I fought just like him.”
