Canelo Alvarez is still doing the media rounds for his big September 16 middleweight championship fight with Gennady Golovkin, and spoke with TMZ about the event.
He told the outlet that he doesn’t see this fight going the distance, which Golden Boy’s Bernard Hopkins made his prediction:
“This fight, I don’t see it going 12 rounds. I can almost guarantee it won’t make the 12 rounds, it will end by knockout.”
Alvarez did clarify that he will be the one winning by knockout, in case you’re quick on that joke.
He also talked about the Mayweather-McGregor event
“Personally, it doesn’t bother me. I’m not losing sleep over it. I think, as a sport, it’s a lack of respect to the fans, to boxing. Mayweather, one of the best fighters in recent years, to be fighting a pro debut, it’s a lack of respect.”
Whether or not it does bother Canelo — or anyone else associated with the event — is pretty much a moot point, anyway. There’s nothing can be done about it, and the good news is I don’t imagine Mayweather-McGregor scaring off any of the people who have waited two years for Canelo-GGG to happen, even if Mayweather-McGregor is a travesty. The audiences are not totally the same.
