With WBC #1 Callum Smith off in the World Boxing Super Series, the sanctioning body has ordered #2 Anthony Dirrell to face #4 David Benavidez for the vacant title formerly held by Badou Jack. The two Haymon-promoted fighters have until July 28th to make a deal, after which a purse bid will be held.

Dirrell (30-1-1, 24 KO) is 3-0 since losing his title to Jack in 2015 and was last seen thrashing Norbert Nemesapati in January. The fight with Smith was originally booked for September 9th in Los Angeles, but whether or not they’ll keep the date remains to be seen.

Benavidez (18-0, 17 KO), 20, has emerged as possibly the brightest prospect in the division. His last win was easily his most impressive, an eight-round obliteration of the very legit Rogelio Medina in Laredo. He’s passed the eye test with flying colors and, should he win, would become the youngest super middleweight world champion in history.

I’ll definitely be tuning in for this one. Here’s hoping they don’t make us wait too long.
