Oleksandr Usyk officially joins World Boxing Super Series

WBC cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has joined the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament, making for six of eight slots in the division now filled.

Usyk (12-0, 10 KO) is considered by most to be the current No. 1 fighter in the division. He joins fellow titleholders Murat Gassiev, Mairis Briedis, and Yunier Dorticos in the field, along with former titleholders Marco Huck and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk.

In other words, when the dust settles in this tournament, we will have a legitimate reason to believe that the winner is, indeed, the true, undisputed top cruiserweight in boxing today. No more guesswork about what would happen if X fought Y; this tournament is built to show us.

The final two spots in the field are likely going to be Krzysztof Glowacki, another former titleholder, and Dmitry Kudrayshov.

The super middleweight tournament is shaping up, too, though it’s not quite as packed.

Titleholder George Groves currently leads that field. Joining him thus far are former light heavyweight titleholder Juergen Braehmer (who seems risky, having not fought at the weight in a decade), plus prospects Erik Skoglund and Jamie Cox.
