Frampton misses weight, loses WBC eliminator status

Carl Frampton didn’t make weight for tomorrow’s fight against Andres Gutierrez.

Tomorrow’s fight between Carl Frampton and Andres Gutierrez had been set as a WBC eliminator match to become Gary Russell Jr’s mandatory challenger, but that will now only be available for Gutierrez as Frampton missed weight today in Ireland.

Frampton hit the scales one pound over the featherweight limit, 126lbs, and would therefore ultimately lose his opportunity to get in line for an immediate title shot with the WBC.

This is rather surprising as Frampton just recently moved up to featherweight two fights ago, but at age 30 it appears the weight just didn’t come off as easily as it has in the past.

I suppose the silver lining for Frampton here is that he’s still rated by other sanctioning bodies, so he could well find himself back in line for a title shot elsewhere in the near future. But for now only Andres Gutierrez will be eligble to win the WBC’s mandatory position tomorrow evening.
