Gervonta Davis, who stormed through Jose Pedraza for the IBF super featherweight title in January and defended it with a three-round thumping of Liam Walsh four months later, is set to appear on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor. His opponent will “likely” be former WBO champ Roman “Rocky” Martinez, according to The Ring.
This is a showcase fight, plain and simple. Martinez (29-3-3, 17 KO), 34, is currently not ranked by any of the sanctioning bodies, has no wins since 2015, and would have a couple more losses on his record with competent judging. Davis (18-0, 17 KO) will almost assuredly thrash him good.
I guess the one advantage of this is that it gives Tevin Farmer time to recover from his hand injury before his ordered eliminator against Francisco Fonseca.
So far, the only completed fight on the May-Mac undercard is Shawn Porter vs. Thomas Dulorme. Badou Jack vs. Nathan Cleverly was reportedly planned, but the WBA have ordered the latter to face mandatory challenger Dmitry Bivol.
