Charlo-Lubin to headline monster tripleheader on Oct. 14

According to a report by RingTV, Jermell Charlo’s WBC mandatory title defense against Erickson Lubin is tentatively set to headline an October 14th junior middleweight tripleheader that is likely be aired on Showtime, live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

Agreements are also said to be in place for Erislandy Lara vs. Terrell Gausha for a WBA title defense, as well as Jarrett Hurd making his IBF title defense against Austin Trout. Showtime executives have expressed their interest in airing all three fights, which, by golly, will make for one helluva card!

The 27-year-old Charlo (29-0, 14 KOs) is currently riding a three fight stoppage streak with him most recently knocking out Charles Hatley this past April. Meanwhile Lubin, 21, is a fast rising prospect-turned-contender who will be making a big step up in competition for this fight.

Lubin (18-0, 13 KOs) is most recently coming off a stoppage win over Jorge Cota this past March, which earned his this mandatory title shot, and while Lubin is really talented for his tender age, it remains to be seen how he’ll fare against the division’s best.

Cuban southpaw Erislandy Lara (24-2-2, 14 KOs) is coming off of a knockout win over Yuri Foreman in January, but that was a rather ho-hum title defense. That said, he’s won five straight fights since losing a split decision to Canelo Alvarez in July 2014.

Lara’s opponent, Terrell Gausha (20-0, 9 KOs) is much more of an unknown quantity. He last beat Luis Hernandez in February but hasn’t faced anyone near Lara’s level. This is going to be a tremendous step up in competition for him.

Finally Jarrett Hurd (20-0, 14 KOs) is coming off of a stoppage win over Tony Harrison in February, his sixth consecutive TKO win. He’ll be taking on a competent veteran in Austin Trout (30-3, 13 KOs) who last lost a unanimous decision to Jermall Charlo over a year ago. We’ll have to just wait and see what Trout will be bringing to the table after a long layoff.
