Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares set for tune-ups on 10/14 FOX doubleheader

Each currently holds a WBA title

Well, looks like Leo Santa Cruz is getting his wish.

The planned October 7th rematch between Santa Cruz and Abner Mares recently broke down, partly due to the former’s desire to set the stage with a couple of gimme wins. Team Mares has apparently warmed to the idea, as the pair will headline an October 14th FOX doubleheader against Chris Avalos and Andres Gutierrez, respectively.

Avalos (27-5, 20 KO), down on the cards, stopped Miguel Flores via cut last July on PBC. He’s now 2-3 in his last five, suffering stoppage losses to Carl Frampton, Oscar Valdez, and Mark Magsayo. I doubt he lasts the distance.

Gutierrez (35-1-1, 25 KO) is a bit more worthy of a foe. He was set to fight Frampton earlier this year before losing a fight with his own shower and his only loss to a human came via majority decision against Cristian Mijares in June of 2016.

Is it wrong of me to hope one of these guys pulls the upset? More promoters need to be punished for these shenanigans.
