Juan Manuel Marquez will officially retire

According to a report from ESPN, Juan Manuel Marquez, who is set to turn 44 years old in a few weeks, will officially announce his retirement from boxing today. Marquez hasn’t fought in over three full years, last beating Mike Alvarado in May 2014. He’s expected to be a first ballot Hall of Famer when the time comes.

Marquez will officially finish his career with a record of 56-7-1, 40 KOs, and has won world titles in four different weight classes. But he’ll probably be best remembered for his longstanding rivalry with Manny Pacquiao, whom he fought four times — a rivalry that ended with a thudding right hand that put Pacquiao to sleep in late 2012.

Marquez was one of the best technicians in the the entire sport, but also endeared himself to fans for his willingness to rumble with opponents which made for some pretty exciting fights.

The aging fighter had wanted to come back for another marquee fight over the past few years, but he was severely hampered by knee problems which never really allowed him to do so. He also had some trouble finding the right kind of opponent at the right weight to fight.

Marquez’s official announcement is expected to come on ESPN Deportes’ Golpe a Golpe show today, where he serves as a boxing analyst.
