Conor McGregor’s boxing career may well be over, but the UFC star and champion has bowed out of it all with some grace, congratulating Floyd Mayweather for his performance last Saturday night, praising his skills, and talking about some adjustments McGregor feels could have given him a better shot.

Notable to me is this bit about Mayweather in particular:
“Congrats to Floyd on a well fought match. Very experienced and methodical in his work. I wish him well in retirement. He is a heck of a boxer. His experience, his patience and his endurance won him this fight hands down. I always told him he was not a fighter but a boxer. But sharing the ring with him he is certainly a solid fighter. Strong in the clinch. Great understanding of frames and head position. He has some very strong tools he could bring into an MMA game for sure.”
In all reality, I don’t see Mayweather (50-0, 27 KO) going into MMA and faring any better than McGregor did in boxing, at least not if he fought someone at the top level at 145 or 155 pounds (so, like, a McGregor type), but it’s a nice sentiment.
As for what’s next for Conor, I’d expect a return to the Octagon, where he can get his mojo back on his home turf, not to mention return a bigger star than ever before. All he has to say on the matter is, “On to the next one!”
