Ryan Martin may not have lived up to his “Blue Chip” nickname tonight on the Canelo-GGG undercard, but the lightweight prospect stayed undefeated with a split decision win over a very game Francisco Rojo.

Martin (20-0, 11 KO) won on scores of 95-94, 96-93, and 91-98. BLH scored the fight 95-94 for Martin, who lost a point for low blows in the ninth round.

Martin, 24, outlanded Rojo (20-3, 13 KO), but was outworked in portions of the fight, enough to certainly make it competitive. The wide score in Rojo’s favor seems curious, but there were some in the arena who also felt he deserved the win without TV presentation.

With a 5’11” frame, Martin has tools and promise, but clearly has a ways to go before he’s a serious contender in the 135-pound ranks, and as HBO noted, it’s a question as to how long his body will let him stay at 135 in the first place. He got this win, but if the matchmaking had been just a bit more ambitious, maybe he’d be leaving with his first loss.
