With news breaking that Amir Khan has aligned himself with Matchroom Boxing, former welterweight titleholder Kell Brook says their fight will have to happen this year if it’s ever going to happen. The two domestic rivals have been circling each other for years but we may be closer than ever to seeing them finally meet in the ring.
In an interview with Sky Sports, following Khan’s announcement, Brook asks Khan to stop mucking about and finally agree to a deal for them to square off.
“We need to agree on a fight this year because I don’t know if I will be boxing into next year, if I am honest,” Brook exclusively told Sky Sports.
“I don’t want to be talking this nonsense with Khan, him saying he wants it next year or whenever. It’s got to happen pretty soon or I am done.”
Brook continued by saying that if Khan were to agree to terms to fight him, he anticipates that they both would train like mad men considering the years of bitterness between them, which would only make for a better fight for the fans. He then said that there’s only one fighter in the world who will truly fire him up for competition — and that’s Khan.
With Khan presently slated to return to action on April 21st in Liverpool, Brook says he might show up to the fight to put pressure on Khan, and maybe even ambush him in the ring.
“The fireworks could start. I might turn up for that, I might even jump in the ring and lay a chocolate brownie on him.
”No strawberries... chocolate brownies only.”
There are certainly fans out there who believe the Khan-Brook beef has been well overcooked for some time now, and justifiably so. But considering that they’re still two of the biggest names in the UK, and it’s a real ‘bad blood’ fight, it’s still sure to be a huge event and a real money-maker.
Better late than never?
