Once a fixture on pundits’ pound-for-pound lists, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez finds himself at the bottom of a mountain following his stunning knockout loss to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. He reportedly won’t be prepping for the climb much longer, as his manager tells ESPN that Gonzalez is aiming to return in “April or May,” possibly on the undercard of the planned rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.
Considering that Gonzalez made his stateside name alongside Golovkin, it would be fitting.
Despite looking undersized and outgunned against Sor Rungvisai, Gonzalez (46-2, 38 KO) intends to not only continue campaigning at super flyweight, but potentially make the jump to bantamweight once he “dominates the division.” He’s still relatively young at 30 and has a new team behind him, of course, but I’m not certain how much I want to see him try that.
At least it would give us some ever-so-slightly rekindled hope of that Naoya Inoue fight.
