Spence’s trainer: Peterson’s intellect, toughness make him dangerous

Derrick James isn’t looking past Lamont Peterson on Saturday.

On the latest edition of PBC Jabs, Errol Spence Jr’s trainer Derrick James talked about his fighter’s Saturday meeting with Lamont Peterson, what makes Peterson dangerous in the fight, and more.

On what makes Peterson a tough opponent

“What makes Lamont Peterson dangerous is his level of intellect, his intelligence, his durability, his toughness. We didn’t really change much (in training camp), but worked on certain aspects of the game plan. The way we attack will be a little different.”

On Spence’s mindset compared to the Kell Brook fight

“He goes into the fight with the same mental state, but at the same time, he’s very familiar with (Peterson). He knows the level of toughness. With Kell Brook, we didn’t really know, we’d never been in the ring with him. We’d seen him fight other guys and beat other guys. But with this guy, he comes in definitely stronger thought process and a stronger mentality, because he knows this is a tough guy.”

On his prediction for Spence-Peterson

“I don’t know about the whole prediction thing. We train hard. Everybody goes in there with the idea of winning, just like Lamont Peterson. My focus is we go in and get a victory. I don’t really care how it comes, I just care that we get one. I’m sure (trainer) Barry (Hunter) and Lamont feel the same way.”
