WBA and WBC welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman finally has his return date set, as the 29-year-old titleholder will be back in action on May 19 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, live on Showtime.
Thurman (28-0, 22 KO) doesn’t have an opponent officially set yet, but the name floating around for weeks has been Jessie Vargas, with the original rumored date for the fight being April 14. Now we’ve got the date, but still no opponent, which could just be down to getting negotiations fully squared away with Vargas, or it could mean someone else is in the mix.
Thurman hasn’t fought since beating Danny Garcia to unify the two belts last March, and underwent elbow surgery following that fight, which has kept him on the shelf. He’s been visible during his break, doing plenty of interviews and making appearances at fights, and the biggest — or at least most demanded — fight out there for him is Errol Spence Jr, but that won’t be happening in May. If it happens this year, it will be late in 2018.
