Canelo vs Golovkin rematch official for May 5

As expected, the highly-anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is on.

It was expected, and now it’s official. Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will meet again on May 5, live on HBO pay-per-view. A venue will be announced soon, though it’s most likely going to again take place in Las Vegas.

Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO) and Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KO) fought to a highly-controversial draw last September, with most observers feeling Golovkin had done plenty enough to win the fight. The rematch was anticipated immediately, and it figured that it would take place on Cinco de Mayo, an annual big boxing weekend.

Canelo, the younger man at 27, will be looking to prove he wasn’t gifted a draw that first time around, and there is the thought that he might be able to do better than in the first fight, as he’s still young, whereas the 35-year-old Golovkin has probably peaked at this point — which is not to say he’s declining, necessarily — and gave all he can give that first time around.

“I’m delighted to once again participate in one of the most important boxing events in history,” said Alvarez. “This second fight is for the benefit and pleasure of all fans who desire to see the best fight the best. This time, Golovkin won’t have any excuses regarding the judges because I’m coming to knock him out.”

“I am ready to battle Canelo again and am happy he took this fight again,” said Golovkin. “This is the fight the world wants. This is the fight boxing deserves. I didn’t agree with some of the judges’ decisions in the first fight. This time there will be no doubt. I am leaving the ring as THE middleweight champion of the world.”

What do you think? Will the rematch see Canelo or GGG with his hand raised once the dust is settled?
