Jermell Charlo calls out Sadam Ali for 154 unification

Jermell Charlo wants to unify with Sadam Ali, but Golden Boy doesn’t seem keen on the idea — for now.

The Charlo brothers ended up 2017 with mad buzz, as Jermall did his thing in his first foray at 160, and then Jermell laid a severe smackdown on Erickson Lubin to cap the calendar.

Both are now open for their next affairs, and while it looks like Jermall will tango with Hugo Centeno in a middleweight clash, we wonder what the “little” Charlo is up to. He gave a hint, maybe, on Twitter, and that tweet was seconded by Showtime boxing boss Stephen Espinoza:

He wants to fight Sadam Ali, or, as he puts it “the 147LB who got a blessing from Cotto.”

And, see that Espinoza, who buys the bouts that run on Showtime, retweeted the post?

Is something cooking here?

I reached out to Golden Boy Promotions’ Eric Gomez; GBP promotes Ali, who took a risk moving from 147 to 154 and hit the jackpot when he wrecked Miguel Cotta’s farewell fete Dec. 2.

”Not in our immediate plans, but possible,” Gomez told me.

We’d heard that Ali could be defending his WBO 154 belt versus Liam Smith, the Brit. And word on that, then?

“Won’t know till Monday,” Gomez replied.

So, there you go. 154 Charlo, it looks like, has to turn his attention to other challenges, because Ali is booked.
