Tonight at 10 pm ET on HBO, Daniel Jacobs and Sergiy Derevyanchenko headline a tripleheader from New York’s Hulu Theater, with the vacant IBF middleweight title on the line in the main event.
Jacobs (34-2, 29 KO) is coming off of back-to-back wins over previously unbeaten opponents Luis Arias and Maciej Sulecki, and will look to run his “0”-taking streak to three against Derevyanchenko (12-0, 10 KO), a familiar face he’s sparred with many times, as the two share a manager and trainer.
Derevyanchenko is looking to break out as a top middleweight with a victory over an upper echelon opponent, and obviously both men are looking to take the belt.
In the co-feature, Alberto Machado (20-0, 16 KO) defends his WBA “world” super featherweight title against Yuandale Evans (20-1, 14 KO). The opener will be a rematch in the featherweight division, with Heather Hardy (21-0, 4 KO) taking on Shelly Vincent (23-1, 1 KO).
RESULTS
- Daniel Jacobs def. Sergiy Derevyanchenko by split decision (113-114, 115-112, 115-112)
- Alberto Machado def. Yuandale Evans by TKO (2:25 of round 1)
- Heather Hardy def. Shelly Vincent by unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93, 99-91)
ROUND-BY-ROUND
DANIEL JACOBS vs SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO
Round 1: Sergiy coming forward, looking to use some pressure early. He’s the guy moving forward. Jacobs turns him around near the ropes and throws, but nothing lands. Jacobs lands a right hand, and Derevyanchenko goes down! 10 seconds left in the round. First time Sergiy’s been down as a pro. Time runs out on the round. Jacobs 10-8
Round 2: Left hook from Derevyanchenko, then a right hand, and Jacobs staggers a bit halfway into the round. Jacobs on his bike a little bit, trying to get his legs back. Jacobs goes southpaw in the corner. Back to orthodox. Derevyanchenko still coming forward. Jacobs looks to the body, got a right in and got out. Derevyanchenko 10-9, Jacobs 19-18
Round 3: Sergiy still looking like the aggressor. Not Jacobs “running,” mind you, but Jacobs not leading the dance. Jacobs switches southpaw again for just a moment, then right back. Good hook from Jacobs. Left to the body from Jacobs. Sergiy comes in, Jacobs dips low and ties him up. Derevyanchenko throws a few shots up top, nothing lands clean. Jacobs showing off some nice defense. Jacobs back southpaw. Left to the body. Back to the right handed stance. Derevyanchenko charges in again with a couple shots upstairs. Nobody landing big eye catching shots right now. They’re fighting, obviously, like they know each other well. Jacobs misses a couple. Derevyanchenko with a right, Jacobs with a body shot. Derevyanchenko 10-9, 28-28
Round 4: Right hand from Sergiy, then Jacobs with some nice body shots. Still a fight where they’re both sort of waiting on the other to screw up, then take advantage. But Derevyanchenko is the aggressor here. If that matters a lot to the judges in scoring, it could make a difference. Jacobs back to the body with another shot. Couple of jabs from Derevyanchenko. Right hand from Sergiy, and he forces Danny to the ropes again. Jacobs with a nice right hand, Derevyanchenko felt that one, but he comes back with a good left hand! Trading at the bell! Jacobs 10-9, 38-37
Round 5: Sergiy still marching forward. Body shots from Derevyanchenko. He’s got Jacobs in the corner, lands again to the body. Body work had been Jacobs’ advantage so far, but now Sergiy is opening up there, too. This is starting to feel like it might be a really good fight. It’s been good so far. They’re just hitting a groove now, it seems. Derevyanchenko making Jacobs miss, then goes back to the body with a left and a right. Derevyanchenko having a really nice round here. Derevyanchenko 10-9, 47-47
Round 6: Jacobs going southpaw in the corner early in this round. Derevyanchenko tries to line him up there. Jacobs just staying in the corner, now finally gets out and stays on the ropes. Gets rocked back a bit on a shot from Sergiy. Jacobs staying southpaw. Good hook from Jacobs, then to the body. Right hand from Jacobs when he switches back. Derevyanchenko throwing back! Both guys throwing real power shots now. Jacobs having a nice bounce-back round here. Another good right hand. He slips a shot and goes for a murder left hook, but it doesn’t land. Body shots from Jacobs. Derevyanchenko misses a right hand. I’m making it sound like Sergiy isn’t fighting back, but he is. Jacobs with a shot to the body again. Jacobs 10-9, 57-56
Round 7: Jacobs is switch hitting a lot in this one. He comes out southpaw again this round. Derevyanchenko still stalking. Jacobs with a left hook, then a right hand on the inside. Throws an uppercut and misses. Derevyanchenko continuing to work, not landing a ton, but working. Jacobs back to the body. Right hand up top from Jacobs. Derevyanchenko maybe waiting too long at points in this round. Left hook from Derevyanchenko late. Jacobs 10-9, 67-65
Round 8: Sergiy chasing, jabbing, lands one. Jacobs working around the ring. Derevyanchenko misses a right and eats an uppercut. Derevyanchenko trying to get low. Body shot from Sergiy. Uppercut again from Jacobs rocks Derevyanchenko’s head back. Jacobs coming forward now. Derevyanchenko goes to the body. Both guys landing some this round, Jacobs probably getting the better of it by my eye. Jacobs 10-9, 77-74
Round 9: Derevyanchenko trying to open things up, Jacobs’ defense has been really good tonight. Everything Derevyanchenko has done well, Jacobs has done a little bit better. That’s really been the story of the fight, at least to me. Jacobs 10-9, 87-83
Round 10: Derevyanchenko with a good right hand that catches Jacobs’ attention. He’s getting aggressive now, fighting like he needs these rounds, which I think he does. Jacobs in the corner. Derevyanchenko looking to make something happen. Jacobs not getting a lot done this round. Derevyanchenko’s got his power shots going. He’s not going away, that’s for sure. Jacobs on his bike a bit. Might have taken this round off to some degree, saving energy for the final two. Just a thought. Derevyanchenko 10-9, Jacobs 96-93
Round 11: Derevyanchenko pressing again, Jacobs on the bike a little again. Right hand from Sergiy. Derevyanchenko bulls him to the corner again, then throws with Jacobs bouncing around on the ropes. He’s not leaving anything in the tank. Jacobs with a good uppercut and a straight left, he’s awake in there. Right hand from Sergiy. Another. Left to the body. Derevyanchenko really fighting to win here. Jacobs throws a left off the ropes. They jab at the same time. Jacobs coming back in the final minute of this round, making it more of a toss-up. Jacobs throwing to end the round, Derevyanchenko with him right there. I think Danny stole this round. Jacobs 10-9, 106-102
Round 12: Derevyanchenko coming out like he needs a KO. I think he probably does. He’s throwing some heavy shots at Danny. Jacobs’ defense has been really good, not that Sergiy hasn’t landed, but Jacobs has made him miss a lot, too. Halfway into the round, Jacobs moving and throwing enough to not give anything away. Right hand from Derevyanchenko. Another shot. They’re both throwing with a minute to go! Just a good fight here. Jacobs with a hard body shot. Jacobs with a right hand. 10 seconds. Derevyanchenko throwing, Jacobs throwing. And we come to the end. Derevyanchenko might’ve had his best round here in the 12th. Good fight. Good, good fight. And a terrific final round. Derevyanchenko 10-9, Jacobs 115-112
ALBERTO MACHADO vs YUANDALE EVANS
Round 1: Quiet first minute, and then down goes Evans on a left hand just over 70 seconds into the fight! Back into things, and Evans is staggered on a right hook, then goes down again at the end of a flurry! This is looking just like Evans’ last step-up fight. Uppercut, right hook, DOWN GOES EVANS AGAIN AND IT IS OVER! Machado TKO-1
