John Ryder won a mandatory challenger position with the WBA today, knocking out Andrey Sirotkin at Copper Box Arena to put himself in line for a crack at super middleweight titleholder Callum Smith.
Ryder (27-4, 15 KO) knocked out Sirotkin (15-1, 4 KO) at 2:54 of the seventh round. It was a competitive fight, with Ryder cut before he was able to close the show.
He’s already indicated his desire to be Smith’s opponent for a big fight at Anfield, which is Smith’s goal at this time. If the fight happens, it’ll be in 2019. There’s also the WBA “world” title, held by Rocky Fielding, who faces Canelo Alvarez on Dec. 15 in New York.
