Taylor: Martin a nice lad, but no respect come Saturday

Josh Taylor talks about his this weekend’s WBSS quarterfinals match against Ryan Martin.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

In this video interview with our friends at Fight Hub TV, Josh Taylor talks a bit about his preparations for this World Boxing Super Series’ opening round and what he expects in the fight. Check out some excerpts below...

On what he’s doing at this point before the fight:

“The weigh-in [is today] and then it’s just saving energy, get fueled up and ready to go so, yeah, I’m at that point now where I just wanna get in there and I’m real excited for Saturday. Can’t wait.”

On what he makes of Martin’s demeanor during the build-up to this fight:

“Yeah, he’s nice and relaxed. He seems a good guy, to be fair. You know, he seems a real cool guy but that respect will be going out of the window on Saturday. But I respect him, he’s a good fighter, seems like a real nice lad so, you know, there’s no need for all that trash talking other stuff that goes on. I’d rather not do that anyway but I am fighting Saturday anyway so it doesn’t matter what he says.”

On if he’s been overlooking Martin by any chance:

“No, not at all. I mean, he’s a good fighter. That’s one thing with me, I think always is and always will be, I’ve learned now through watching fighters in the past that I know of...they’ve been overlooking fighters and they get beat on the night because they’re not fully focused. So that’s a lesson I’ve learned through traveling, coming up as an amateur and watching other fighters and watching the game when fighters have underestimated their opponents. So that’s one thing that I’ll never do.

“And I’ve watch Ryan Martin a lot. He’s a really good fighter, he’s got it all, really. So I can’t afford to overlook him. That would be very stupid of me.”
