According to Manny Pacquiao, his separation from longtime trainer Freddie Roach was just a one-off, and Roach will be reintegrated into his camp for his upcoming fight with Adrien Broner on Jan. 19.
Roach won’t be returning as Pacquiao’s lead trainer, however, as Pacquiao explains that Roach will be taking on a “supervisor” role while Pacquiao’s best friend, Buboy Fernandez, will continue to handle the lead training responsibilities.
Pacquiao parted ways with Roach after his loss to Jeff Horn in Brisbane, following their meteoric rise together which lasted over a decade. There were some rumors that Pacquiao wasn’t pleased with Roach not pointing out Horn’s rough house tactics to the referee during that fight, but Pacquiao never came out and publicly ridiculed his trainer.
Even still, it was clear the was at least some kind of tension as Roach later claimed that Pacquiao wasn’t speaking to him and Roach was soon on the outside looking in as Fernandez took over the training duties for Pacquiao’s next fight against Lucas Matthysse.
But for now Pacquiao now says Roach will be back in the mix, although it’ll be interesting to hear what Roach himself has to say about this arrangement...
