Richard Schaefer was hoping to stage the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight semifinal bout between world titleholders Nonito Donaire and Zolani Tete in Manila, but tells ESPN that that’s not going to happen, saying there’s simply not enough money in putting the fight in the Philippines.

Donaire (39-5, 25 KO) and Tete (28-3, 21 KO) are set to meet in what will also be a unification bout in February or March, when the WBSS continues.

Schaefer says that he’s now looking at venues in the United States to host the fight, and he’ll also speak with Tete’s promoter Frank Warren, who would obviously like to do it in the United Kingdom.

Tete got to the second round of the tournament after traveling to Russia to knock off Mikhail Aloyan, while Donaire scored an upset — and a somewhat unfortunate one, as it was caused by injury — over Ryan Burnett in Glasgow.
