With Roman Gonzalez out of a scheduled Dec. 8 fight on HBO, there was a scramble to get a replacement, and the spot has been filled as expected by Juan Francisco Estrada.
Estrada (37-3, 25 KO) will face Victor Mendez (28-3-2, 20 KO) in a matchup of Mexican fighters. The show will also feature a pair of women’s world title bouts, as Cecilia Braekhus takes on Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes in the main event, and Claressa Shields faces Femke Hermans on the undercard.
Estrada, 28, has become a familiar face for HBO viewers over the past year and change, competing at all three “Superfly” events. In Sept. 2017, he defeated Carlos Cuadras via hard-fought decision. In February of this year, he lost a majority decision to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. In September, at “Superfly III,” he headlined and won a decision over Felipe Orucuta.
Estrada wants a rematch with Srisaket, bu that’s not happening, at least for now, and he’ll fight to stay busy on Dec. 8, in what is scheduled to be HBO’s final boxing broadcast after 45 years in the fight game.
