Well, the rumors turned out to be true: Floyd Mayweather will fight on New Year’s Eve in Japan, as it was announced tonight that he’ll face kickboxing star Tenshin Nasukawa at RIZIN 14 at Saitama Super Arena.
Nobuyuki Sakakibara of RIZIN said at the press conference that there is “work cut out” as far as the rules and weight go.
“As far as the weight class and the rules, we’ll talk about that, we’ll get that situated within the next couple of weeks,” Mayweather said.
That probably will be enough to give people some pause about this actually happening. But for the time being, this is official, it’s real.
Mayweather, 41, hasn’t fought since he toyed with UFC star Conor McGregor in Aug. 2017 in a massive novelty fight. He’s 50-0 (27 KO) in his boxing career, of course, and this will be his first fight outside of the United States as a professional.
Nasukawa is 27-0 in kickboxing, where he generally fights at featherweight.
There will surely be more on this fight in the coming days, so we’ll keep you updated.
